English Lavender

For a garden plant with a fragrant appeal, English lavender is an excellent choice. Scientifically known as Lavandula angustifolia, English lavender emits a pleasant aroma from both its lavender-colored flowers which appear in July and from its attractive grey-green foliage.

Lavender reaches a maximum of four feet in height and width though it generally grows to about two feet high and slightly wider. It can be used in an herb garden, mixed shrub planting, or in a perennial border. Its pleasant grey foliage is semi-evergreen, particularly in the warmer parts of the state. Provide it with well-drained, almost dry soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline soil reaction. Moist soils will probably kill the plant. Full sun with wind protection will allow this plant to achieve its best appearance.

Caring for lavender is quite simple. If the soil is even slightly fertile, additional fertilization is not required. This plant thrives in dry soil, making watering unnecessary. Few pests or diseases trouble this hardy plant. The only care required is to cut back the previous year's shoots in April to encourage vigorous growth and maximum flowering. Prune again in mid to late summer to remove faded flower stalks.

Propagation of this plant is a simple affair. Cuttings can be taken in September or August, or the plant can be carefully divided in the spring. An even simpler way to obtain more of this choice plant is to sow seed in the spring directly where it is to be grown. Plants will grow ten to twelve inches wide within two years of sowing.

The flowers of English Lavender make an excellent choice for dried arrangements since the fragrance will linger for months. Simply cut the flowers when in full bloom and hang in a cool, dark place until dry. The dried blooms are favorite ingredients for sachets and potpourri.

My apple dumpling fragrance is the aroma of freshly-baked apple dumplings. This fragrance begins with top notes of red candy apples, and pears. Middle notes include nutmeg, clove, cardamom and freshly ground cinnamon bark. Base notes include dry notes of vanilla, and hazelnut.

Each of my candles are dye free with hemp wicks.

Burn your candles safely

All of our candles are lead-free, produce 95% less soot.

Please be sure to follow these burning instructions for our candles:

For best results, keep wick centered and trimmed to 1/4". Burn candle long enough, each time, for the top to pool across the surface for maximum burning time, extinguish candle and trim wick if candle flame gets too high. Keep candle free from any foreign matter, matches, wick trimmings, etc. Place on protected surface. Recommendations are to always discontinue use when 1/2" of wax remains in candle container; however, I have burned mine to the bottom (always sitting on a stone coaster to protect the surface of my furniture).

WARNINGFailure to follow instructions could result in fire hazard or injury. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not burn candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Avoid drafts and excessive vibrations. Your container may become hot while the candle is burning. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Additional Candle Tips:
Tip 1: You can avoid tunneling by making sure you, more times than not, burn the candle for the appropriate time. If a candle starts to tunnel and has not gone too deep you might be able to correct it by letting the candle burn for longer periods (hopefully, on a day you will be home to watch it).

Tip 2: As a general rule, wicks should be trimmed every 3-4 hours of burning. So with our candles, if burned for the recommended time period, you could trim the wick prior to each use.

Tip 3: Our all cotton wicks have some extra benefits, besides the clean burning. They will easily trim without the use of scissors. Prior to each re-lighting simply pinch off the charred tip with a tissue--to keep the fingers clean. The tip will break off in the perfect place nearly every time.

Tip 4: If your candle starts burning to one side, adjust the wick or check for a draft. All cotton wicks do not stay in place as well as the non-desired metal-core wicks, so you may need to adjust the wick occasionally.

Tip 5: Any candle flame can smoke if the flame is not burning efficiently. Other brands of candles will smoke because of the petroleum levels in the wax. Even essential oils can cause smoke. Our candles will not smoke if you take proper care of the wicks. If one of our candle flames is smoking, it is not burning efficiently. What you are seeing is carbon that is not able to burn off because the flame is too big or is in a draft.

Remove the candle from the draft and/or trim the wick. Wicks will tend to cause smoke if the wick is not kept trimmed before lighting. Please trim your wicks with every use.

This is because people are actually going for products that are pure, real and natural and not something concocted in a Petri dish in a laboratory. The market is filled with products that are synthetic and that is why natural wax is more preferred over other types of wax that are sold in the market. Soy wax is also a very good wax to use because it comes straight from nature. One does not need to make use of chemicals and other synthetic materials to come up with soy wax. See, this natural ingredient is also renewable so nature continues to produce this natural wax. To be able to get soy wax, there are farmers who plant soy beans, which, as we all know, is totally natural. When the soy beans grow and are then ready for harvest, the farmers then pick the ready soy beans and these are often sold to companies or small businesses which produce the natural wax from the soy beans. Using natural wax like soy wax is something that people should practice because it does help local farmers. See, when people use this natural wax, this means that the farmers who do produce the soy beans get a good amount of income because people patronize what they grow. Just so you know though, despite the fact that all soy wax come from soy beans, there are still different types of this natural wax. For example, there are those which have been made using more soy and a lesser amount of oil. There are also those which got a less amount of soy and more oil to make the natural wax. Though the difference may not be easily seen with the naked eye, it all depends on how you actually plan on using the natural wax. See, there are natural waxes which can help diffuse fragrance better while there are those which can absorb color dyes added. It is important that you know what kind of soy wax or natural wax you are going to use given the reasons above. See, you may only get disappointed when the natural wax that you choose does not work as you expected it to be just because it has different properties. You can make natural candles and spa candles using the various natural waxes that are available in the market right now.

Soy Wax is thicker and softer than paraffin wax. All natural soybean wax is so soft that it can be scooped with a spoon. This softness and thickness is a little hint to the fact that soy candles burn 30% longer on average than traditional candles.
Soy Wax is biodegradable. If an accident occurs and hot wax is spilled on your countertop, it can easily be cleaned up with soap and water. Jars can be reused by rinsing them out and placing in the dishwasher.
